The generation of photovoltaic energy in Romania has surged by 60% in the first eight months of the year.

The production of energy from photovoltaic panels increased by 60% in the first eight months of this year compared to the same period last year, reaching 2,569 MWh, according to data released on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics.During the analyzed period, the country’s electricity imports rose by 60%, while exports decreased by 10%.

Representatives of the INS specify that the data on photovoltaic energy production also include prosumers.

  • ‘The production of electricity from wind power plants and photovoltaic solar power plants is provided by C.N.Transelectrica S.A.’.
  • ‘The production of energy from photovoltaic solar plants also includes prosumers,’ is stated in the methodology used by INS to compile this data.
  • However, the Association of Prosumers and Energy Communities in Romania argues that these figures cannot fully capture the total production of prosumers, as they use part of their own production for self-consumption.

‘Prosumers consume as well, and their production is not metered, only the surplus delivered to the grid,’ explained the association’s president, Dan Pîrșan, to HotNews.ro.

The National Institute of Statistics did not include this clarification in the press release published on Monday.

INS: Electricity imports increased by 60%, while exports decreased by 10%

On the other hand, electricity imports during the first eight months of the year also rose by 60%, reaching 8,351 MWh.

In contrast, total domestic electricity production was down by 9% (35,640 MW).

Exports also declined by 10%, amounting to 7,171 MW.

INS data further indicate that during the first eight months of the year, national electricity consumption increased by 1. 4%.Industrial consumption grew by 1. 1%, while that of the population rose by 2. 9%.

  • Romania increases its renewable energy target to 38% of consumption by 2030.
